2019 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards nominations: ‘Vice,’ ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ …

Five of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Stan & Ollie” and “Vice” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories on Thursday, Jan. 10 (halfway through the Oscar nominations voting period). The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists  — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.

“Vice,” which we are predicting will win the Oscar, contends in period/character makeup as well as special makeup effects while its closest Academy Awards rival, “Black Panther” is up for just special makeup effects. Our third-place Oscar contender “Mary Queen of Scots” vies for both period/character makeup and hairstyling

While each of the five guild races has five contenders, members do not always nominate those films that are still in the running for the Best Makeup & Hairstyling Oscar. For example, “Mary Poppins Returns” which was spurned by the academy, reaped bids with the guild for both period/character hair and makeup.

These awards will be handed out on Feb. 16. Makeup artist Susan Cabral-Ebert and hair stylist Robert Louis Stevenson will be feted for their lifetime achievements while Melissa McCarthy will receive the Distinguished Artisan Award.
