Considering this year’s Best Supporting Actress race, I was thinking about Amy Adams’s Oscar history, specifically how she’s managed to rack up so many nominations in such a short amount of time without ever emerging as a clear winner. Her Oscar nominations are:

    2005- Best Supporting Actress, Junebug
    2008- Best Supporting Actress, Doubt
2010- Best Supporting Actress, The Fighter
2012- Best Supporting Actress, The Master
    2013- Best Actress, American Hustle
2018- Best Supporting Actress, Vice (Most Likely)

What I’ve noticed about these nominations is that only once has she ever been the sole acting nominee from her film. Let’s take a look at her nominations now including her nominated costars.

    2005- Junebug
    Best Supporting Actress- Amy Adams

    2008- Doubt
    Best Actress- Meryl Streep
Best Supporting Actor- Philip Seymour Hoffman
    Best Supporting Actress- Amy Adams
    Best Supporting Actress- Viola Davis

    2010- The Fighter
Best Supporting Actor- Christian Bale (Winner)
Best Supporting Actress- Melissa Leo (Winner)
    Best Supporting Actress- Amy Adams

    2012- The Master
    Best Actor- Joaquin Phoenix
Best Supporting Actor- Philip Seymour Hoffman
    Best Supporting Actress- Amy Adams

    2013- American Hustle
    Best Actor- Christian Bale
    Best Actress- Amy Adams
    Best Supporting Actor- Bradley Cooper
    Best Supporting Actress- Jennifer Lawrence

    2018- Vice
Best Actor- Christian Bale (Most Likely)
Best Supporting Actor- Sam Rockwell (Possibly)
Best Supporting Actress- Amy Adams (Most Likely)

As you can see, Amy Adams is almost always joined by 2 or more costars in her Oscar-nominated roles, with the exception of Junebug which was her “rising star” vehicle.

I believe this is why she has never managed to win before. She always does an amazing job, but is rarely selected as the highlight of the cast and/or someone to be separated from for a win. In other words, she’s never been able to stand out from the ensemble to emerge as a winner.

This is helped by the fact that the Oscar-caliber films she chooses to appear in are usually either acting-forward (Doubt, The Master) or are Academy favorites (The Fighter, American Hustle) so her nomination is one of many.

This can be used to explain some snubs in retrospect, most notably Arrival but also Big Eyes and Enchanted. In all of these films she gave excellent performances but she’s not someone who you think of when you think of someone who carries movies. Being the sole acting play for the film hurt her as there were no other actors that she was able to support. That’s why I like to think of Amy Adams as the perfect ensemble player.

I have no idea how this plays into this years race. I will say that unless she can establish herself as a full-force leading lady in the next few years I think her Oscar win will be for a supporting performance.

Either way, this was something that I noticed that I wanted to share. Let me know what people think 🙂

She got it this year. Two of those year she was against undeniable performances (Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway) and other two years she was overshadowed by her competitors from the same film (Viola Davis and Melissa Leo), in 2005 she just wasn´t lucky enough I guess.
This year Emma and Rachel will split votes like she did with Viola and these two will also take votes from Margot Robbie for playing a similar role while Regina King is being ignored everywhere and gets weaker everyday. Her biggest competition may be Claire Foy if she gets nominated but I doubt it.

I think she’ll have to settle for a Supporting Actress for now (and deserves the hell out of it because who else could play the matriarch of one of the most despised/divisive political families in the world, kill at it, and get undivided universal acclaim). But, like Cate Blanchett who also had to wait multiple noms and win in supporting and then leading, she’ll get that deserved Best Actress Oscar.

When the bulk of your nods are in the supporting category that’s who you are. Winning supporting after all these years is fulfilling prophecy.

I must admit I find Amy Adams pretty much a non-entity. I liked her a great deal in Big Eyes, Arrival & Nocturnal Animals but beyond that I’ve had zero interest in her. I generally find her either bland, boring or annoying.

I wish she would win an Oscar for a better performance than Vice. I am hoping Regina King wins, although I would be very happy if Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Yeoh, Marina de Tavira, Emily Blunt or Claire Foy were to win for much better performances than Adams delivered. I am definitely feeling an “anyone but Adams” feeling about the Supporting Actress category this year.

I have similar feelings about Adams that Aunt Peg has expressed – I loved her in Big Eyes, Arrival and Nocturnal Animals, but found her only adequate in her other films. (I haven’t seen Sharp Objects and have no opinion on it as a result).

If she wins the Oscar this year I will regard it as a career Oscar – they may decide to give Glenn Close and Amy Adams career awards this year. I will be disappointed if Adams wins but it’s not the end of the world, just a disappointment.

She’s perfectly fine, but definitely one of the most overrated actors in Hollywood for me. She rarely stands out in the ensemble because she is almost always overwhelmed by the lead or other supporting players there…most of her Oscar nominations are coat-tail. In Doubt, Streep and Davis stole the show (the latter with barely any screen time). In The Fighter she was overwhelmed by Leo and Bale. American Hustle was all about Bale’s transformation (that film was hammy and didn’t deserve any acting nominations), and the same thing happened in Vice though she’s back to supporting there. Even in The Master, where she had more to do she was outmatched by Phoenix and Hoffman. Yet she has reaped all the rewards for being a great ensemble player.

That said, I would just about nominate her for Arrival, and Junebug. So that’s 2 Oscar nominations so far. I prefer her in the smaller films like Junebug, Miss Pettigrew and Sunshine Cleaning where she is actually allowed to make a mark. She should definitely do more comedy. She’s by far the Queen of the coat-tail though when it comes to Oscar success in recent years, not once has she been the most memorable part of the ensemble, except when it mattered for Arrival.

she’s an extremely talented character actress who should be rewarded for years of nuanced work in an interesting and diverse range of films. she should be praised for her clear love of the craft, opting to be in an ensemble as long as a thought provoking, cinematic story is being told even though she may not always be the leading lady or in the hollywood spotlight. one thing she is definitely good at and we can all agree on is her skill of choosing projects/films to be in. she has one of the best filmographies out of those actors/actresses working today, and she rarely ever disappoints. i say she’s deserved every single nomination, and imo should have won for The master.

I thought she was outstanding in American Hustle and should have won.

She’s clearly not overrated. She’s always pitch perfect in every role she have played.

I really liked her in Leap Year and hope she’d do more rom-coms once she wins an Oscar. Lol.

I just love movies. And awards.

American Hustle is her only bad nomination imo, and it was mostly DOR’s fault. She would’ve made a worthy winner for either Junebug, The Master (fuck Anne Hathaway’s fake-ass Fantine) or Arrival (only Ruth Negga was better than her in that lineup, Meryl Streep stole her nomination).

I haven’t seen Vice so Idk how she is in it, but even if it’s not good I still wouldn’t mind her winning since I don’t like Beale Street and both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, while brilliant in The Favourite, have already won.

That’s the Irish thingie? I just realized this is probably the only Amy Adams movie I’ve watched.

She’s amazingly versatile and makes it look so easy, so she is underappreciated at times.

Her type is the bubbly, innocent, and positive girl (Enchanted, Doubt, Junebug) but she can do so many things as we all know. But whenever she does her type she totally shines.

And it’s funny that the films mentioned here she was actually the lead (Arrival, Big Eyes, Nocturnal Animals)
