It’s my first post here (pray, be gentle), but I felt compelled to ask/rant after this morning’s disappointing (for me) BAFTA nominations…

My case: I simply can’t understand her lack of success when it comes to award nominations in general (except Golden Globes, of course), but let’s be honest, it’s easier to get nominations with category splits there.

For me she has a decent career and usually picks interesting roles. She has proven herself across various genres, including some others wouldn’t touch, and is often singled out for her performance even in less-than well received films. Here are some receipts:

Comedy/Drama – The Devil Wears Prada, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Drama/Thriller – The Girl on the Train, Sicario

Musical/Comedy – Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns

Dramatic/Action/Sci-fi/Horror – Edge of Tomorrow, A Quiet Place

These are some examples just to name a few. Her versatility is undeniable, so I’m curious, why the lack of success outside the Globes?

You would think the BAFTAs would have supported her more but she has a paltry 2 nominations in her career from the home group. And while I like her performance in Train, I understand it as more an alternate to the fact Huppert was ineligible that year. This morning I expected her support to have increased but she was sadly ignored again for two very different but well received performances. What does she have to do to achieve BAFTAs favour?

At least things at SAG have improved. It took her a while to break through there, but I thought her securing a spot for Mary Poppins in such a tight race would make her a secure bet for her first (and overdue) Oscar nomination. Now I’m afraid, indeed certain she will follow the pattern of Helen Mirren’s double SAG recognition and be out of the race for the Oscars completely…better luck next year Emily, maybe you need to churn out 3 great performances in the same year to finally be recognised…

She might just miss out on both her nominations, which will just be tragic and hilarious at the same time.

Considering she’s British she get zero nominations.

I think her award is her husband and why not? He had it all. She’s still lucky for me.

Emily is blessed that she has projects and movies that get attentions. She is maintaining her relevance and that’s what matters. Other actresses after winning awards and being famous they hardly get any projects. Sometimes being non-Oscar nominated actor/actress has an advantage.

Blunt is a legend, and in a decade or two  (or maybe even sooner than that) she’s gonna give a powerhouse lead performance that’ll sweep every award with her overdue narrative. It’s a shame she’s been under m-appreciated up until this point, but she’s only gaining in acclaim and popularity, so her time is coming.

Blunt definitely should be recognized. I think her biggest opposition this year is herself, as I belive vote splitting is keeping her from getting nominations (ex. BAFTA).

I think she is outside this forum but overrated inside this forum. The problem I have with Blunt is that she hasn’t yet given a performance that I felt NEEDED to be nominated for awards despite her impressive resume. There’s something about her that reads basic and bland and I think she has to fight that some how. Like she’s likeable enough but she’s never one I feel deserves more attention than she already has. So I underrate her but it seems those voting for these awards tend to outside of SAG.

To Dan, thanks for the lightness of your reply, it’s cheered me up already! (I’m not sure how to quote you properly here  especially finding it tricky on my phone…but indeed, she is certainly more lucky than I made out…not sure who I’m more jealous of, Emily or John. Could I share them? Lol

I just wish she would have more success from awards bodies in general. I find it baffling how other actresses such as her friend Amy Adams seem to get all the nominations with ease each time, yet it always seems a battle for Emily when they have similar talent. It will baffle me further come nominations day when Adams has 6 Oscar nominations and Emily still has 0. I guess I just want her to be a bit luckier on the awards circuit, is all. You’re right in that she has a career to be envied.

I really hope you’re right! That’s an interesting view. Although I must admit I heard people say her time was coming when Girl on the Train arrived, so with two much more popular performances being snubbed again this year it feels a little exasperating to her fans lol

I wish she had gotten in for Sicario and replaced Jennifer Lawrence.

I hadn’t thought of this at all! If so, do you think she still has a chance in Supporting, like when Alicia Vikander split votes for Ex Machina/The Danish Girl? I’m not expecting a win of course, just be happy with a nomination at this point…

BAFTA is just so messed up these days. If Emma Stone could win a BAFTA for La La Land, then I wonder why they couldn’t nominate Emily Blunt for A Quiet Place at least.

    Blunt is highly underrated

FYC Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) for best actress

I love your comment but would switch for MPR (although I’d pick her for AQP too)… BAFTA awarded and nominated Emma Stone AND Ryan Gosling (I think) for La La Land, yet neither can sing. Then come along Blunt and Miranda both talented singers with theatrical stage presence, both ignored…there’s no justice lol…

I think Stone and Ryan Gosling’s lack of singing talent/training HELPED them in their awards quest because they were packaged as actors going beyond their comfort zone while those with some training and talent are held to a higher standard. Plus they fell for Stone’s character and that audition song. Funny how these things work, right? I guess ultimately it’s still about overall acting and not just singing.

Blunt to me, while always great, has never given a performance, like someone said, that absolutely needed to be nominated. Part of this is that she chooses to do a wide variety of movies instead of Oscar caliber dramas each year like some of her more decorated peers.

This year is strange for her, as she is playing an extremely popular role in a film that had a lot of buzz for like a second, but is dying down each day. She is also being considered for an early release genre film that is slowly fighting its way into the BP race. It seems like she’s 5th/6th for both categories, as there is no finalized fifth slot in both but it is unsure if she is going to net one of both of them.
